"Squirrel Material"

When I was teaching I would sporadically present to the kids (or have the kids work on) things that were completely unrelated to our given task for that day or unrelated even to the course in general. Sometimes it was poetry, sometimes history. Sometimes even math!

There was method to this madness, of course.

I wanted the kids to see education, especially our math class, was always about learning the curriculum of the course. It's a great big interesting world out there. And sometimes you come across things (or think of things) that are just so interesting that it was ok to take a pause your march through the curriculum, take a breath, and examine them. That's "Squirrel Material".
